Kum Nye – Tibetan Yoga

Kum Nye, introduced by Tarthang Tulku to the West in the 1970’s, is a yogic practice of working with energy. By inviting mind into the body, into the poses and movements, we can sense the inner experience becoming alive. Usually, our awareness does not reach much below the upper body, with the trunk, arms, hands, legs and feet not getting sufficient attention. The subtle body energy system, with its elaborate system of channels and chakras, is likewise impoverished. Of course, we will be out of balance when body, mind and heart do not communicate well. Kum Nye restores this inner balance.

Each part of the body can be a source of energy, information, and ongoing communication. Without an awareness of the entire body, and the rich feeling and knowing experiences it can provide, thoughts will determine our reality and script the journey of our life. Kum Nye activates and massages life’s internal energies (this is the Nye), and provides a sense of present awareness (the Kum), which enables us to contact new ways of knowing that are more comprehensive, reliable, nourishing, and revealing than the world of thoughts ever can be. By activating the flow of energies, of joining feelings, breathing, and movements Kum Nye awakens the inner experience and the Body of Knowledge we all have access to.

Learning to feel in Kum Nye is like learning to see, hear, taste and smell, and body awareness is the faculty capable making the feeling experience our home. Kum Nye teaches the language of the body (Nye), not merely the physical body, but also the site of our experience (Kum).

We start by using the Kum Nye approach to reduce and alleviate stress patterns, which occurs as holding within the energy body system is relaxed. The releasing energetic flow restores and harmonizes optimal levels of energy, and brings forth new ways of knowing, which can be helpful in dealing with personal or professional matters. But soon, the emerging, flowing feeling tones are joined by cycles of breathing that reflect new lines of communications between body and mind, between all energetic centers in the body (chakras), between inner and outer experience and, eventually, between life itself and our inner potential. Kum Nye thereby sheds light on our journey of life, through access to abundant energy and new knowledge, allowing us to manifest our best during our remaining years.

The Kum Nye Intensive is part of the Kum Nye Teacher Training Level I.

Due to popular demand Dharma Publishing Academy is offering, for the first time in the US, a comprehensive teacher training based on Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche’s book Kum Nye – A Tibetan Yoga (formerly called Kum Nye Relaxation).

Kum Nye, introduced by Tarthang Tulku in the West in the 1970’s, has its roots in Tibetan medicine and in texts that describe living in accord with physical and universal laws (vinya). Kum Nye is a mind-body healing system that relaxes body, senses and mind through body-awareness. It uses postures, slow movements, and breathing methods to restore wholeness – integrating body, senses and mind. The basic practice of Kum Nye is to activate the flow of feeling throughout the body, restoring this most vital sensory ability. In accumulating and expanding the inner experience, we connect to larger rhythms of the universe, tapping into abundant vitality and creativity.

Kum Nye is often first used to reduce stress in body, speech, and mind; in this program it begins with a process of inner healing, but Kum Nye can go much further as it established a sense of inner peace as Kum Nye relaxes mind’s repetitive patterns. In Kum Nye’s profound process of inner relaxation an inner transformation begins to emerge in which our own experience can become our best counselor. Through Kum Nye, we discover a source of inner knowing that can guide us in our professional, personal, and spiritual life.

Kum Nye practice first teaches us ‘how to feel’ in a sensing, neutral manner. Feeling and thinking—and the possibility of knowing— make up every experience. The world of feeling and sensing freshly and directly has been neglected in most of our lives as our conditioning has taught us to ‘live mostly in our heads.’ Kum Nye restores this most vital, sensory ability.

By learning the language of the body and establishing a home of feeling, instead of a home of a conditioned self, our inner knowingness wakes up. Through Kum Nye we make contact with the reality of our nature. In the process scarcity turns into abundance, and inner joy becomes a reliable companion.

All great experiences are based on feelings such as inner balance, love, compassion, joy, and even understanding needs to be a feeling in order to become embodied.
